March 17, 2019 (Brussels, Belgium): The 10th Concours Mondial du Sauvignon was hosted by the city of Udine in Italy, on March 8 and 9, 2019. A total 1,010 wines from 26 countries were judged blind by a panel of 73 international experts from 18 countries.
The 122 Gold and 180 Silver medals were awarded to Sauvignons from France, Austria, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Chile, Bulgaria, Germany, the United States, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Greece and Argentina.
France still tops the medal chart with 157 medals (24% more than in 2018). With 45 medals, Austria secured second place. Italy ranked third with a remarkable 66% increase in medals on last year. Two thirds of Italian medals were awarded to Sauvignons from the host region Friuli Venezia Giulia. With 31 % more medals than the previous year, New Zealand rose up to fourth place followed by South Africa.
“The results of the 10th Concours Mondial du Sauvignon fill us with satisfaction and demonstrate, once again, the quality of our wines”, comments Stefano Zannier, regional councillor for agri-food, forestry and fishing resources. “The increased number of medals for Italy, the majority of them for wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia, is a source of pride, as is knowing that the Italian Sauvignon Revelation Trophy was given to a winery from our area. These are results that confirm the capability of our producers and bring prestige to the entire region.”
Besides the 302 medals, the international jury panel awarded 6 Revelation trophies to wines securing the highest scores, recognising the excellence of Sauvignon blanc in the relevant categories*.
The winner of the special “Dubourdieu Trophy”, which is awarded every year to the wine showing the purest and most refined Sauvignon expression, is Domaine Delobel from Touraine. The trophy was created in 2017 as a tribute to Professor Denis Dubourdieu, who was the patron of Concours Mondial du Sauvignon from its inception.

In 2020, the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon will return to Touraine, which successfully hosted the competition in 2013.
“Good weather in 2018 allowed our vineyard sites to prove once again that they are capable of producing some of the finest Sauvignons in the world”, pointed out Thierry Michaud, chairman of AOC Touraine and a wine grower in the Cher valley.
Lionel Gosseaume, the appellation’s vice-chairman and a grower in Touraine-Oisly, added: “This achievement, coupled with excellent memories of the 2013 competition and the 80th anniversary of the appellation due in 2020, naturally made us willing to host the event next year. The international Sauvignon competition’s return to Touraine is an endorsement for wine growers across the region who share a passion for this grape variety. We are already very much looking forward to it!”
